Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!

My name is April Vuorijarvi and this will be my 8th year teaching High School in the Applied Program (formerly known as the Special Needs Department) and I'm so excited to be teaching Science Classes this year across all three grades.

A little about me:
I earned my Master's degree in Human Rights from the University of Malmö in Sweden, where I resided for fourteen years prior to relocating to Texas in 2014. During my time in Sweden, I dedicated five years to various roles assisting Deaf individuals with diverse disabilities. I maintain strong ties to my family in Sweden, notably my two eldest daughters, in-laws, and their extended relatives. As a result, I frequently spend my summers there. Notably, I have picked up both spoken Swedish and Swedish Sign Language during my time abroad

Some fun tidbits about me include my past involvement in roller derby, although I've since retired from extreme sports and now only glide through the rink in my dreams! Amidst the Covid pandemic, I welcomed two Shih-Tzus (Phoebe and Chewie) into my life, leading me to transition from a lifelong cat enthusiast to a head-over-heels dog lover! These days, the majority of my free moments are dedicated to my remaining child at home, a sophomore who keeps me engaged year-round with their water polo tournaments.

The best times to reach me is during my prep time Mondays through Thursdays 2:20 to 3:30 pm and Fridays at 12:00 to 12:55 pm.
