Welcome!

Hello!  My name is Michelle Halvorsen and I serve as a HS Chemistry teacher, teacher of the academic bowl class and head coach of the academic bowl team.  This is my 20th year as TSD's Academic Bowl Coach and I am returning to teach HS science after an 11 year break from teaching science.  I am so excited to be back full time in the high school and to be able to share my love of science with my students!
My background includes:
  • Bachelor's in Deaf Education from Illinois State University in 2003
  • Master's in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010
  • 19 years teaching experience at TSD
  • Taught courses including Math, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry and Physics at TSD from 2004-2013
  • Previously worked for the DeafTEC Grant as a lead trainer and as coordinator of the Summer STEM Camp, hosted at TSD
  • I am also a freelance interpreter and enjoy interpreting in academic settings as well as community settings

I love to read, spend time with my children and husband, and take long walks with our dog, Sophie.  I originally started college on a premed path but switched to a major in Deaf education my sophomore year because I realized I wanted to teach others about science.  I chose Deaf education because I had always loved the language of ASL and this path allowed me to combine my passions and teach students who are Deaf all about science.   I did my final student teaching internship in the high school at TSD.  I fell in love with TSD and the community here and was fortunate to get hired at the end of my internship.
I love science, especially anatomy and physiology, biology and chemistry and I love being able to share what I know with students and see them develop an appreciation for science and how it is everywhere around them.  I also love teaching and coaching academic bowl because it helps me learn too!  I enjoy taking what I've learned as a coach through the years and helping build and develop our talented teams each year.  My objective as a chemistry teacher, academic bowl teacher and academic bowl coach is to help our students learn as much as possible, push them to reach their full potential, and help them have fun doing it.

I have prep during 1st period, then spend the remainder of my day teaching chemistry and academic bowl classes.  Chemistry classes are taught in HS room 308 and Academic Bowl class is taught in HS room 310.  I strive to return emails within 24 hours and invite you to contact me any time you have questions about chemistry class, academic bowl class, our academic bowl team, or your student.

I look forward to working with your students this year!
