Joni Shouse

Hello there!

I’m a proud culturally Deaf alumnus of TSD, Class of ‘84, though my journey began at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSDR). After spending most of my early years at CSDR, I joined TSD and graduated before heading to Gallaudet University (GU), where I earned my B.A. in Communication Arts. A few years later, I obtained my M.A. in Deaf Education/ASL Specialist from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College, WMC).

I’ve been teaching for 19 years, starting as a Substitute Teacher at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES). My passion for teaching blossomed as I witnessed students thrive, leading me to teach English Language Arts and ASL. After taking a brief hiatus to focus on raising my daughter, I returned to the classroom with a renewed focus on creating a bilingual learning environment.

Speaking of my daughter, she’s a proud 20-year-old CODA, and we share many hobbies like reading, playing games, watching movies, hiking, and hanging out with friends. While I haven’t traveled as much as I’d like, raising her has been my greatest adventure, and I’m incredibly proud of the person she’s become.

This is my third year teaching English at TSD, and it’s an honor to be back with the TSD family. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out—I’m here to help!
