Texas School for the Deaf Students Showcase Technologies at Texas Capitol Schoolhouse

Monday, January 28

8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Austin, Texas - January 28, 2019 – Lawmakers, staff and visitors to the state Capitol today are in for a special treat from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) students, among those from districts across the state, are demonstrating the latest technology applications used in Texas school classrooms today.

Thanks to the annual Texas Capitol Schoolhouse event, hosted by the Capitol Schoolhouse Foundation, visitors will experience actual technology-based classes in progress, first hand. Set up and run as regular classrooms, teachers conduct lessons and students demonstrate hands-on, showcasing a variety of unique applications where technology is being utilized in their schools.

This year in the TSD classroom expect to see students demonstrating a variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) applications, including coding skills, robotics challenges, video editing and production, and more.

TSD Superintendent, Claire Bugen, says, “The power of technology for TSD students - who are visual learners - cannot be overstated in this digital age.

“Today’s students will face challenges we haven’t yet imagined, take jobs yet to be invented, and toil in a workplace constantly reshaped by the exponential progress of

technology.

“For deaf and hard of hearing students, Bugen adds, mastering skills using technology goes a long way to level the playing field when it comes to having fingertip access to information.

“With technology in TSD classrooms, students are equipped to ask the right questions and seek answers independently, maximizing their potential as life-long learners.”

TSD is participating at the capitol today among districts, including Coleman ISD, Coppell ISD, Deer Park ISD, Denton ISD, New Braunfels ISD, Pasadena ISD, Temple ISD, and Ysleta ISD.
