FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEAF AWARENESS WEEK
AUSTIN BUSINESSES SUPPORTING TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Sunday, September 22 – Saturday, September 28, 2024
Austin, Texas – September 22-28, 2024 — Deaf Awareness Week, also known as the International Week of the Deaf, is celebrated during the last full week of September, culminating with the International Day of the Deaf.
Deaf Awareness celebrations are encouraged to focus on the theme of Human Rights through Sign Languages, bringing attention to deaf culture and the achievements of deaf people portrayed in a positive way. The goal is to increase solidarity among deaf people and supporters, while promoting the rights of deaf people throughout the world.
In the United States, celebrations are often held throughout the year, with Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) recognizing Deaf Awareness Week in September. Along with the National Association of the Deaf, TSD encourages the community to:
- Gain a greater understanding of the world’s deaf and hard of hearing communities, culture and heritage.
- Learn about sign language as an essential human right, how it is growing in popularity across the U.S. and find resources within your community.
- Discover ways to promote the human rights of deaf people and their access to education and technologies.
This Deaf Awareness Week, please visit these area businesses who have partnered with TSD to support the school, and attend a TSD sports event.
