Promoting Personal Safety: A Guide for High School Parents

In compliance with Texas law, which requires us to provide education on these critical topics, we are committed to promoting the safety of our high school students in a way that is appropriate for their age. Here are four key areas to focus on:

Sexual Harassment

Teach your teens to identify and report sexual harassment, whether it occurs in person or online. Emphasize that it’s never their fault and that they should always speak up if they feel uncomfortable.

Human Trafficking

Human trafficking can happen anywhere, even in our communities. Talk to your teens about the warning signs, such as changes in behavior or relationships with older individuals. Monitor their online interactions, and ensure they know they can come to you if they feel threatened.

Grooming

Grooming is when someone builds a relationship, trust, and emotional connection with a young person to manipulate, exploit, and abuse them. This process often starts subtly, making it hard to detect. Educate your teens about the dangers of grooming, especially online, and encourage them to be cautious about sharing personal information or developing relationships with strangers.

Consent

Consent is the foundation of healthy relationships. Make sure your teens understand that consent must be freely given, ongoing, and can be revoked at any time. Encourage open discussions about respecting boundaries.

Counselors' Presentation

Last Friday, our dedicated tier three and tier two counselors gave an important presentation on these topics, helping to equip our students with the knowledge they need to stay safe. This presentation was part of our efforts to fulfill state requirements and ensure our students' well-being. They provided valuable insights into personal safety, including consent and recognizing unhealthy relationship dynamics.

Report Concerns

If you have any concerns or want to make a report, please do not hesitate to contact our Principal, Mr. Karl Hummel, at [email protected], our SEL Coordinator, Jerilyn Winegard, at [email protected], or our Tier 2 counselor Victoria Flis at [email protected].
