Hello, Peter Bailey here, Superintendent at Texas School for the Deaf. Some updates for the month of November, the month of November is special, it’s a time for family, friends and gathering and celebrating in different ways. This is a month of feasting and festivals so I hope you have a great one. I’d like to mention a few things that have been happening here at TSD, as you know Texas School for the Deaf has its own tagline: Learn Grow and Belong(LGB) and when I got here I’ve always felt that I still carried ACE with me: Accountability, Commitment, and Expectations. Now when you apply everything you have ACE’d it and my staff know that I have instilled ACE in our school and our staff apply this by making sure our students are getting everything they need to ACE it with all this in place. I’ve been thinking about a motto, each organization or school has their own motto and I had one for PSD in Philadelphia when I was there and I’ve left that with them and coming to TSD I wanted to think of a new one: TSD is, TSD can, TSD will. Now applying ACE to LGB: TSD Is-Learning, TSD Can-Grow, and TSD Will-Belong, making sure that everyone works together and feels that sense of belonging. This is my vision for TSD going forward.
I’ve able to connect with many people as there was a lot of activity in the month of October and will continue those activities going forward. In October I had an opportunity to meet with several Legislative offices downtown, having an opportunity for them to get to know me and I to get to know them. I made connections with several and learned of mutual connections. The purpose of this was to develop relationships as I’ve explained previously and I am looking forward to making more connections downtown.
We then shifted to Homecoming, which is our Community Day and it’s really a day for everyone to get together: family, friends, alumni, students, staff, board members,and administrators. Just a great day. It was a nice day that we were able to have it and based on attendance of admissions we estimated about 1700 people in attendance. We did not count volunteers so I would estimate we had a total of 2000 people on campus. This is a unique and cherished tradition of TSD, it’s a time where everybody can feel like they’re back home and gaining that sense of belonging. We had our JV and Varsity volleyball game and football game that night along with our homecoming royalty court. We had events throughout the day and that evening we had a unique situation where our competing team could not show up to our football game for Homecoming because of an unforeseen circumstance. We couldn’t drop our plans and had to become creative so we had an intrasquad game. We divided our team and coaches to establish a Blue team and White team for our Homecoming game. This gave us the benefits of making sure that our game was still on and all of our players had field time. Everybody was able to enjoy the game and watch the event. Our Royalty Court winners were announced at halftime, which were McKenna and Xavier. We had a very unique Homecoming, but again the purpose was to celebrate together, and what a great event it was. As these festivities have come to an end I’d like to shift and talk about a partnership. TSD has several partnerships, but this one in particular is unique. It is the TSD Foundation partnership, TSDF for short. They have always been a support to TSD, and they have what is called an Innovation Education Grant, IEG for short. These are grants only available to TSD that our staff, apply for in requesting different resources that they need. 53 applications were sent. They reviewed the applications and granted 43 applications, the 10 remaining were not because they didn’t qualify but the 10 remaining applications were request for things that TSD can cover, such as chairs or tables. The remaining 43 applicants won their grants with a total of $44,000 given to TSD to be allocated according to the amounts requested. I’d like to thank TSDF for their many years of support to TSD.
As I continue my goal of meeting people and representing TSD there may have been events or particular meetings I may have overlooked. Please continue to let me know so I can work on scheduling times to attend or meet with you.
One event happening in November is the Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf will be having their Gala mid-November. My wife and I will be in attendance representing TSD and looking forward to making more connections.

Hola, soy Peter Bailey superintendente de Texas School for the Deaf. Algunas actualizaciones para el mes de noviembre. El mes de noviembre es un mes especial. Es tiempo para familias amigos, reuniones y para celebrar de diferentes maneras. Este es un mes de festines y festividades. Así que espero que tengan una muy buena. Me gustaría mencionar algunas cosas que han estado sucediendo aquí en TSD, como ustedes saben Texas School for the Deaf tiene su propio eslogan: “Aprender, crecer y pertenecer” (LGB). Cuando llegué aquí siempre sentí que tenía ACE conmigo: Responsabilidad, compromiso y expectativas. Ahora cuando aplicas todo, te haz sacado un 10 y mi personal sabe que yo he inculcado el ACE en nuestra escuela y nuestro personal lo aplica al asegurarse que nuestros estudiantes están recibiendo todo lo que necesitan para sobresalir con todo esto establecido. He estado pensando en un lema, cada organización o escuela tiene su propio lema. Yo tenía uno para PSD en Filadelfia cuando estuve ahí y lo dejé ahí con ellos y al venir a TSD quiero pensar en uno nuevo: TSD es ,TSD puede, TSD será. Ahora el ACE al LGB : TSD es aprendiendo, TSD puede crecer y TSD pertenecerá, asegurándonos de qué todos trabajen juntos y sientan un sentido de pertenencia. Esta es mi visión para TSD de aquí en adelante.
Pude conectar con muchas personas ya que hubo muchas actividades en el mes de octubre, y continuarán esas actividades de aquí en adelante. En octubre tuve la oportunidad de conocer a varios oficiales del legislativo en la ciudad. Teniéndolo oportunidad de qué ellos me conocieran y que yo los conociera a ellos. Hice conexiones con muchos y aprendí de conexiones mutuas, el propósito fue desarrollar relaciones así como explique previamente y espero hacer mucho más conexiones en la ciudad.
Ahora pasemos a la bienvenida de exalumnos, el cual es un día comunitario y es un día realmente para todos estar juntos: familia, amigos, ex alumnos, estudiantes, Personal, miembros de la mesa directiva y administradores. Fue un día genial. Fue un buen día, lo pudimos lograr y basado en la asistencia tuvimos un estimado de 1700 personas presentes. No estamos contando los voluntarios, así que yo estimo que tuvimos un total de 2000 personas en el plantel. Esto es algo único y una tradición que atesorar de TSD. Es un momento en donde todos sienten que están de regreso a casa y recuperan ese sentimiento de pertenecer. Tuvimos nuestros juegos de volibol de JV y de Varsity, un juego de fútbol esa noche junto con nuestra corte Royal de la bienvenida de ex alumnos. Tuvimos eventos durante el día, y esa noche fue una situación única donde nuestro equipo competidor no pudo presentarse para nuestro juego de fútbol de nuestra bienvenida a exalumnos debido a circunstancias imprevistas. No podíamos quedarnos así, tuvimos que ser creativos así que tuvimos un juego dividiendo nuestro equipo. Dividimos el equipo y a los entrenadores para establecer un equipo azul y uno blanco para nuestro juego. Y esto nos dio la oportunidad de asegurarnos de qué nuestro juego siguiera y todos nuestros jugadores tuvieron tiempo en el campo. Todos pudieron disfrutar del juego y ver el evento. Nuestros ganadores de la corte Royal fueron anunciados a medio tiempo, ellos fueron McKenna y Xavier. Tuvimos una bienvenida única, pero de nuevo el propósito era que todos celebráramos y tuvimos un gran evento. Conforme terminamos las festividades. Me gustaría cambiar un poco el tema y hablar acerca de nuestra asociación. TSD tiene varias sociedades pero esta en particular es única, es la asociación de la fundación de TSD. Sus iniciales son TSDF. Ellos siempre han apoyado a TSD, y ellos tienen lo que llaman una beca educativa de innovación, iniciales IEG. Éstas son becas sólo disponibles para TSD. Las cuales nuestro Personal pueden solicitar para pedir diferentes recursos que necesiten. Se enviaron 53 aplicaciones. Ellos revisaron la solicitudes y aceptaron 43 solicitudes. Las 10 restantes fue debido a que no calificaban, pero esas 10 restantes solicitaron cosas que TSD puede proporcionar como sillas y mesas. Un evento que sucederá en noviembre es la Gala de Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf a mediados de noviembre.
