Hello, I’m Peter Bailey, Texas School for the Deaf Superintendent. It’s now October 2023 and -- Wow! -- time has flown since I started in July.
Some updates and information for you -- and again my goal is to continue with his monthly vlogs and I’m committed to that. So, some updates, we now have 494 students and I predict that we will hit enrollment of 500 students any time. So, I will keep you posted. And again, this information is geared towards our alumni. Now, I have noticed in talking with some people some interesting things have come up, alumni means to graduate from school and that’s when they become alumni, but for us, it also means if you came to school to TSD at a young age and may have left before graduating, we still consider you our alumni. So, I want you to know anytime I mention alumni you are included. You’re part of TSD’s history, so, you’re welcome to come to any open public events such as homecoming, any games, or others various events, and I look forward to seeing you all here.
Now, I want to talk about a few events. The school hosts a variety of events and a lot of events happen on campus. You can take a look at our social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, or our website to find those events, but I’d like to highlight some recent events that I have attended as superintendent. My wife and I went to Indiana. We went to Indiana School for the Deaf to watch the football game against TSD. We flew out there and TSD competed, but unfortunately, we did not win that game, and Indiana really did a great job. They are now 8 – 0 after their most recent victory against MSSD. So, I’m looking forward to seeing how they proceeding and their season in the playoffs. So, congrats to Indiana. And as always, TSD is always continuing to work hard. Now, something special happened in Indiana. It was their homecoming and they invited TSD’s academic bowl team to Indiana for the first time to be able to compete during their homecoming weekend. We competed really well, but lost. And I actually would like to do the same here at TSD, during our homecoming. If we’re competing against a Deaf school, I’ll invite their academic ball team as well. That way we’re highlighting as many teams as possible, so, I’m looking forward to that.
Now, this past weekend, my wife and I flew out to DC to Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) because they were hosting the national tournament, The Spike Out. There were seven deaf schools that came out to compete and Wow! what a great competition it was. They all did well, and TSD, as we know, won championship. So, it’s really inspiring to see our girls working so hard to gain that championship. Flying back together with the team was a nice celebration and I’m really proud of the girls. We have so many sports teams here such as our fifth and sixth grade, well, fourth fifth and sixth seventh and eighth and JV all have won championship this year, and I’m looking forward to see more to come. We also have a new championship that was won with our Cross-Country team recently at the Florida School for the Deaf, so, see what we can do. Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to progress. So, with all your support, we’re gonna go far, and I’m looking forward to seeing that happen.
I’d like to shift to some school news. We had a surprise on campus Harbor Freight Tools has a program specifically for schools. There were around a thousand applicants and 25 winners were selected. One of our teachers, Keith Baker, from our auto collision and repair autobody shop was one of those winners, and was recognized for that. Harbor Freight Tools for Schools came out to surprise him and presented him with a $50,000 check. Now, it’s not for Keith but for the school. it was a great surprise, and we were able to have his family there to surprise him as well. It was truly nice to celebrate with some news media interviews that you’re able to view on our website. So, congratulations to Keith Baker.
I have two other updates. The first is a TSD’s Foundations Gala that they hosted. Now, this is an annual gala that fundraisers for the school and I want to thank them for a successful gala. It was a nice celebration. I’m now looking forward to the Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf and hosting their gala next month, and I will be in attendance. If you know of events that are happening that I should attend, please reach out and let me know about them. Now last but certainly not least our significant date of October 21 -- I know everyone has marked their calendars for this -- TSD’s homecoming event. It’s going to be a big day to celebrate, and I’m hoping to see you all there. So long and more to come next month.
