BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR ACADEMY AWARD WINNER TROY KOTSUR VISITS AUSTIN
Tuesday, June 14, 2022
Austin, Texas – June 14, 2022 - On the heels of winning an Academy Award for best actor in the movie CODA, Troy Kotsur visits Austin Texas with a stop at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) today.
Kotsur is in Austin to be featured in a documentary being shot at the school produced by Austin-based non-profit content studio, Emergent Order Foundation, for its’ Dad Saves America content initiative.
This evening at 7:00 p.m., TSD hosts a public appearance with Kotsur who will share about his life as an actor who happens to be deaf, and what it’s been like since winning the Oscar.
Lauded for casting deaf actors in its roles, CODA features Kotsur, a deaf father and fisherman, alongside co-star, Marlee Matlin, as his wife, portraying a Maine fishing family with two children. The film centers on the couple’s daughter, Ruby, a CODA (child of deaf adults), and their only hearing child, who struggles between staying and working to help her family and following her passion to sing. CODA was also awarded best picture and best adapted screenplay.
Earlier in the day, Kotsur gives a short workshop and meets some of the school’s theater students.
“We are delighted to have Troy visit the campus and community,” TSD Superintendent, Claire Bugen says.
“Without a doubt, students and guests will get first-class advice from such an amazingly and talented actor.”
John Papola, CEO of Emergent Order Foundation said, “when we saw Troy’s inspiring Oscar speech about his path to that moment, and specifically how important his relationship with his father has been to him, we knew we needed to convince him to come to Austin to dive deeper into that story.
“We are incredibly excited to partner with the Texas School for the Deaf to celebrate Troy.”
Kotsur added, “I am excited to meet with the next generation of Deaf actors and share my experience with them and the entire TSD community.”
