Young Artist Receives Honorable Mention
|

|
An art piece titled "There Is Always Hope" by TSD Senior Rosalia received Honorable Mention at the annual De'VIA Youth Competition held in September.
Deaf students from 11 schools submitted 448 pieces of art work that incorporated one or more aspects of Deaf people's communication, culture, and history.
The competition was hosted by the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) and Museum of Deaf History, Arts and Culture, in honor of De'VIA artist Chuck Baird.

On September 24, 2020, TSD Senior Annabelle moderated a BLM webinar where Deaf advocate Christopher Johnson, was the presenter. The webinar focused on empowerment and self-advocacy and how to provide resources and tools to help Deaf youth thrive in the classroom and community during a pandemic. The event was such a success that hosting another BLM webinar is scheduled for November 10th.
This opportunity came about for Annabelle since she is the Jr. NAD Ambassador. Since an early age, Annabelle has been a leader. In 5th grade, she was the Student Council President. In high school, she became a member of the Jr. NAD and has participated in several committees.
As a Jr. NAD Youth Ambassador, Annabelle hopes to raise awareness about diversity--not only at TSD, but also across the United States.

Nyle DiMarco, who attended TSD as a young student, has a new docuseries that premiered on Netflix, October 9th, called Deaf U. The eight episode docuseries follows six Gallaudet University students--one alumni: Dalton Taylor and another student, Cameron Symansky, who attended TSD for two years.
While at TSD, Dalton Taylor (Class of 2016), was outgoing and an athletic student in football and basketball. According to his mom, Lori Taylor, "TSD opened Dalton's eye to his Deaf identity and culture."
A person who was instrumental in this production is our own, Peggy Ann St. John Wenger. She was the talent scout, and provided support in consultation and videography.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
Three TSD Staff Recognized
by City Theatre Council
|

|
|
Three talented TSD staff were recently recognized by the B. Iden Payne Awards Committee, a council that honors outstanding theatrical performance, production, and design here in Austin.
Our high school theatre teacher Brian Cheslik received nominations for Outstanding Direction of Musical Theatre and Outstanding Digital Performer (live). Cheslik, who manages the Deaf Austin Theatre, co-produced a collaborative production with Ground Floor Theatre of Next to Normal, a performance featuring both Deaf and hearing actors together. Cheslik was also recognized for his live stage reading of Zoomitis.
Other actors recognized include TSD middle school teacher assistant Seth Washington for his performance as Dan in Next to Normal, and middle school wrestling coach Andrew Daly for his live stage reading of Civil Engagement.
The award ceremony is scheduled for November 9th.
